The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the win, repeating his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win against Fleetwood.
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an superb last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
