Ten years back, the England assistant coach was playing for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he is focused to assist Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. The road from the pitch to the sidelines started with a voluntary role with the youth team. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his destiny.
His advancement has been remarkable. Beginning with his first major job, he developed a reputation for innovative drills and great man-management. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, while also serving in international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like world-class talents. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the peak in his words.
“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us for optimal success.”
Obsession, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour day and night, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies feature player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. The coach highlights the national team spirit and dislikes phrases such as "break".
“It's not time off or a break,” he explains. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
Barry describes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and we dedicate long hours toward. We must not only to stay ahead with developments and to lead and create our own ones. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.
“We get 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We have to play a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.
“To build a methodology enabling productivity in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ all the time available from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”
He is getting ready for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; instead. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.
“The manager and I agree that our playing approach should represent the best aspects from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the versatility, the robustness, the honesty. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.
“For it to feel easy, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely as they do in club games, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.
“There are emotional wins available to trainers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, attacking high up. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. All teams are well-prepared now. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”
Barry’s hunger to get better is all-consuming. While training for his pro license, he had concerns regarding the final talk, since his group included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into the most challenging environments available to him to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.
He completed the course with top honors, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry to his team with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.
Lampard’s successor at Chelsea became Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
