Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca revealed that the run-up to Saturday's victory against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.

The Italian offered a somewhat cryptic comment in his post-match interview even after earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points propelled Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, potentially lightening the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's drought without a win to four outings.

Yet, when asked about the full-back's contribution and overall performance, Maresca surprisingly divulged his displeasure over the previous 48-hour period at the club.

"How the players are eager to learn has been excellent and this is the reason why I commend them - because with a host of challenges, they are doing very well after a complicated week," he stated.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the previous 48 hours have been the most difficult because many people failed to back us."

When pushed further on his meaning, the former Leicester City manager elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When questioned if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was aimed at supporters or the media: "I adore the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."

Fitness and Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension issues, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I really praise the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing exceptionally. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer there, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play almost all season minus our top player.

"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to recognize because the work from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton cemented their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark

It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea manager.

In that timeframe, the Italian had traveled back with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, held a session at Cobham, faced a pre-game press briefing where he appeared at ease, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was not obvious whether any specific press stories had unsettled him, if online comments played a role, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
