‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

The first time Gorka Guruzeta competed in English soil, an young appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he found the net. The second time he took the field in England, against the English side two months later, he netted. Another occasion, against Manchester City six weeks after that, well, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, also. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker reveals, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the short journey to the airport and a further journey to England, this time to play Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the club, partially owing to the requirements of their participation. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.

In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in four decades. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he went through a ACL injury, being released, a drop in category and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the UCL.

“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but with every stage you go through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his first game and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.

“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it helps. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then head home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. Every small aspect: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact repeatedly. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. He left upset in that year, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks savor the moment. All the more so after last year which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
