Gas Detonation Costs 3 Law Enforcement Officers Amid Eviction Operation in Northern Italy

Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews approached the property close to Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals got detained at the scene and another man who ran away subsequent to the blast was located soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location showed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He was convinced the explosion had taken place on a level above the doorway and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being activated”.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
