Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's CEO Exits Following Shift Into Chicken.

The boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the UK might have reached maximum pizza demand while diversifying the franchise into poultry items has been replaced after tensions with its board.

Leadership Transition

Rennie is exiting after just two years in the top role, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while Domino's searches for a long-term chief.

The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to pivot the UK's largest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, remarking recently there was not “massive growth” left in the UK's pizza market. He noted chicken was the fastest-growing menu item in the world.

Board Disagreements

It is understood that there was tension between the CEO and the board over his approach and direction, although the company's release said he was departing “as a joint decision”.

New Brand Launch

In September, Domino's introduced its chicken-focused product line – which the former chief described as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.

While the firm is still planning to expand it across its nearly 1,400 branches next year as planned, it views fried chicken as an addition to its main pizza offerings.

Board Statement

Bull, the Domino's chairman, stated: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and value creation in our primary operations. We are concentrating on identifying the suitable leader to oversee the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”

Market Challenges

In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said sales dipped by one and a half percent in the Q3. In the summer, it alerted that the quick-service industry had “become tougher” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the budget and rising wage costs for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in six-month income.

Other pizza operators are also struggling. Pizza Hut disclosed the closing of dozens of outlets a last month, after the firm behind its UK venues fell into administration.

Health Efforts

Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards balanced diets, Domino's has rolled out reduced-calorie items, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 kcals as well as vegan and gluten-free pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.

Interim Leadership

Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the betting firm William Hill. It is believed that she prefers not to occupy the CEO position permanently.

She commented: “Our team has a multiple active expansion and operational projects that we will be dedicated to implementing at a rapid rate.”

She said these involved further work on the organization's logistics network and product development, and its customer retention initiative.

The pizza chain is also in need of a long-term finance director until 16 March, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. For now, Snow is interim finance chief.
