The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The previous season concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.
The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
