Meteorologists have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the weather service.
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. The mercury are expected to be low, meaning extra layers vital, according to forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this signified the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
The guidance for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is absolutely paramount.
