The remains of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been discovered inside freezing appliances in an flat in western Austria.

The victims, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The freezers were concealed behind a drywall partition in the apartment, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his brother aged 53, were detained in June. The older man, a colleague of the female victim, told police last week that there had been an incident—but rejected murder.

Speaking to reporters earlier, a official for the public prosecutor's office stated the two suspects were being kept in custody on "strong suspicion of homicide".

The names of those involved have not been disclosed by authorities, in compliance with national regulations.

Their going missing was initially flagged by the female victim's relative, who is based in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Authorities stated the male associate claimed at the time she had embarked on an prolonged visit with her daughter to visit her parents in Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then noted as being active in foreign locations several times.

Yet when investigators searched the woman's home, her cellphone was located.

Someone also reported overhearing a commotion in the apartment, and screams of "mother" on the day the pair were believed to have vanished.

An expanded official inquiry was launched, with officers finding various messages originating from the mother's device—among them a notice of quitting to her company and communications to the 55-year-old suspect.

Authorities stated a amount in the thousands was also moved to the suspect.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office stated to media representatives on Tuesday that a storage facility had been secured before the mother and child went missing and a freezer had been positioned inside.

The brothers extracted the appliance from the facility on the very day the victims went missing, she stated. And a shortly afterward, they acquired an additional appliance.

Authorities believe they consider this indicates the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.

"The cause of death remains unclear due to the advanced decay of the victims," the official said.

A legal representative—from the legal authorities—said the specific order of occurrences is still unclear, but the remains were professionally hidden and were not found during a earlier inspection.

Although the men were taken into custody in June, it was only on November 12 that the suspect acknowledged an incident and to storing the victims. He denies any murderous intent, authorities confirmed.

In a related development, his 53-year-old sibling admitted to a concealment but disputed involvement in a killing.

The two suspects are currently in custody awaiting trial in prisons in Innsbruck and Salzburg, situated at a distance.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and the top legal representative stated the "suspected killing of two... constitutes the sudden and brutal end of a mother and child and exposes a brutal scheme".

"Females of all ages are being murdered due to the sole reason that they are female," they added.

"Femicides are a deeply rooted and society-wide problem that we must combat firmly."
