Out of all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I have ever watched, nothing has remained with me quite like the dread-soaked ending of a viscerally violent as well as highly provocative film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, the Spanish filmmaker crafted a grim, bleak and often savage world that included some tiny , desolate hints of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars seems like it originated from an impulse to push animation further, the filmmaker explained that it was actually a try to convey a global, cross-cultural message concerning “the mutual source of all wars.”
That message is conveyed through a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously based on a popular series of lovable characters.
Maturing in a culture focused on warmongering and the defense industry, numerous these creatures are fixated on slaughtering unicorns, thanks to a religious scripture that claims them they previously were kings of the forest, before the unicorns expelled them.
A few have not completely accepted the propaganda, , would rather sample substances and engage sexually in the woods.
In contrast to their gentle equivalents, these bright beings display genitals , definite sex drives.
For a particular notably brutal, pessimistic creature, Bluey, the battle with the unicorns turns into a route toward dominance — and particularly to supremacy above his softer, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor and an apparent antisocial figure , and while fear dominates his group and kills his teammates individually, he seizes progressively power for himself, through ever more gory, destructive ways.
At the same time, the horned creatures are experiencing their own terror, through an expanding, destructive monster in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director stated. “However it becomes a more intense and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it’s a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars commences resembling one of the more whimsical features by a renowned animator, which find a naughty glee in letting cartoon characters swear, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Afterward it turns into more akin to a more grim movie from the same artist, with increasingly explicit brutality , a tangible link to genuine tragedy of war.
Ultimately, it’s a full-on theatrical horror carnage.
The terror that turns the film an ideal spooky-season viewing starts a lot earlier than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the hardcore gorehounds, for fans of extreme cinema who wish to see a film they have not watched previously, and who can handle a narrative which delivers no restraint.
See it with the lights off free from interruptions, and that ending will dig deep within you and take up residence there.
