Should Bellingham wants to force his way into the English strongest squad, the smart move to eliminate the dramatics. The way he reacted upon realizing that he was going up after a match of mixed performance in Tirana was not good enough.
"I don’t want to make more out of it but I stick to my words 'conduct is crucial' and consideration for the players who substitute on," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you must accept them when you're on the field."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no need for a tantrum. The captain had only moments earlier made it the Three Lions two goals ahead in a meaningless fixture, there were six minutes left and the player, following an inconsistent display, received a caution for bringing down the Albanian striker. It was not a questionable change. Actually it would have been foolish for the head coach to leave Bellingham on given that there was a chance Bellingham would be suspended of the initial fixture of the World Cup by receiving a another booking.
But Bellingham drew all eyes toward himself. No one could overlook the young midfielder's frustration when he clocked that he would be substituted for a teammate. His arms went up in exasperation and although he shook Tuchel’s hand on his way to the sideline it was obvious that the head coach did not appreciate it.
This is the challenge facing Bellingham. He praised Marcus Rashford for providing the assist for Kane to head in his second of the night, but his other actions was counterproductive. There was no chance arguing was going to reverse the substitution. The coach has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the necessity of showing proper conduct.
The midfielder, left out of the team last month, has faced close inspection upon his return to the fold in the current camp. Practically he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him with his response to his substitution as the side wrapped up a flawless qualification run by defeating a feisty challenge from Albania.
It means the jury is out on whether the squad function at their best including Bellingham. The performance was inconclusive. Tuchel tried new things from the manager in the beginning. He has provided England organization and direction lately, building with a defensive midfielder, a No 8, a playmaker and dedicated wide players, but there was a different feel against Albania. Quansah was made his England debut, the midfielder was in the starting lineup internationally and the positioning of John Stones as a part-time midfielder gave a similar look to the Manchester club's 2023 treble winners.
Bellingham had ups and downs. He set up a shot for Eberechi Eze in the latter period but at times seemed overly eager to shine. Several poorly executed passes. A pointless clash against an opponent at the beginning. The team looked disjointed during most of the second period. One Albania chance resulted from he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card occurred when he lost the ball from Broja and fouled Broja.
Ultimately the squad's strength was decisive. Tuchel threw on Phil Foden, who appeared better suited to the role that Bellingham had played during the first half, and Bukayo Saka. Later Saka delivered a set-piece for the captain to open the scoring. It highlighted that corners and free-kicks are going to be vital in the upcoming tournament.
Still, though, the focus was on Bellingham. The brilliance of the winger's delivery for Kane's goal was partly forgotten in the ridiculousness of the player change. At the end, everyone was watching him. Tuchel came over from behind and directed Bellingham towards the away supporters. Their connection is not damaged. The coach isn't ready to give up on him at this stage. But if Tuchel is inclined to give him the central position remains in doubt.
