The UK's leading artificial intelligence institute has unveiled a fresh initiative to help defend the nation from online assaults targeting essential systems including energy, transportation and public services.
The Alan Turing Institute will carry out a programme of science and innovation specifically designed to protect the UK from adversarial risks, according to a recent announcement.
This strategic shift follows major restructuring at the government-backed institute, including the departure of its previous CEO last month after both staff concerns and government pressure for major restructuring.
The fresh initiative comes amid rising apprehension about Britain's vulnerability to internet outages and online threats.
Recent incidents have highlighted these risks, including a major outage affecting worldwide digital services and fresh digital assaults that affected operations at key facilities and distribution networks across several organizations.
A ex-military leader of the UK's air and space warfare centre will provide findings next month on how the government-funded institute can best support the scale of government AI ambitions in national security, homeland protection and information gathering.
The center's head, a ex-Amazon UK executive, confirmed that nearly eighty separate studies at the organization with 440 employees have been terminated, transferred out or completed because they do not align with the fresh focus.
The organization has faced organizational challenges since last year as staff protested against changes, culminating in a collection of workers filing a whistleblower complaint to the relevant regulatory body.
The center's administration stated that these staff complaints were independently investigated by a neutral third party that found them to have lack merit.

The organization will also target measurable pollution decreases in transport systems, industrial operations and critical infrastructure.
In the health sector, the priority will be on developing virtual replicas of cardiac organs, representing a leading edge of individualized AI-powered treatment that could enhance treatment approaches and patient outcomes for seriously ill heart patients.
