Voting Begins in the Netherlands as Polls Suggest Possible Repeat Win for Geert Wilders

Voting has commenced for general elections in the Netherlands, with current polling data suggesting that the far-right firebrand Geert Wilders and his Freedom party (PVV) could once again emerge victorious, though experts believe PVV stands little chance of joining the future coalition.

Polling Trends and Political Landscape

The PVV, which previously pulled off a surprise first-place finish and formed a multi-party all-conservative government that lasted barely a year, is currently marginally ahead in surveys and is projected to secure between 24 and 28 seats in the 150-member house of representatives.

However, the far-right party's popularity has declined since 2023, when it secured 37 seats. Every significant political group have stated they will not entering into a coalition with the PVV leader, and who precipitated the collapse of the previous government in the summer over disagreements concerning his radical anti-refugee proposals.

Major Parties and Forecasts

Following a election period focused on issues such as migration, healthcare costs, and the country's severe housing crisis, the left-leaning GL/PvdA coalition, headed by ex-EU official Frans Timmermans, is placed a near second, expected to win between 22 to 26 parliamentary seats.

Also performing well is the liberal-progressive D66, projected to increase its seat count nearly fivefold to 21 to 25 seats, while the right-leaning CDA is expected to significantly increase its seat tally to between 18 and 22.

The outgoing cabinet members – which included the Freedom Party, liberal-conservative VVD, populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and NSC – are all projected to lose seats, with some facing heavy declines.

Voting Process and Political Division

Under the Netherlands' electoral system, gaining just 0.67% of the national vote yields a party a seat in parliament. Among the 27 parties participating in the vote – which include senior-focused parties, for youth, for animals, basic income advocates, and sports parties – up to 16 may gain entry to parliament.

This high degree of fragmentation ensures that no single party is expected to secure a majority, and Holland has been governed by multi-party governments – often including several groups in recent governments – for more than a century.

Government Formation

The PVV leader claimed that "the democratic process would end" in the Netherlands if the PVV becomes the largest party yet is shut out of government. However, opponents and experts say that winning the most seats does not assure government participation and that any coalition with a parliamentary majority is democratically valid.

Although the final outcome is uncertain and government negotiations may require several months, analysts indicate that after the most radical administration in recent memory, the future government is expected to be a broad-based alliance led by either the moderate left or centrist right.

Election Day Details

Polling stations, such as those in the Madurodam model village in The Hague and the Anne Frank house in the capital city, began operations at 7:30 AM (6.30am GMT) and will conclude at 9:00 PM. A typically reliable exit poll is expected soon after closing time.

After the vote, an official negotiator will test possible coalitions that could command a majority in parliament. Prospective coalition members will then draft a governing pact for the coming term and must face a confidence vote in parliament before assuming power.
